The Fear of Success

Paulo Coelho

Often times we think that as soon as we experience some success, life will get easier. The opposite is usually true and sadly some start to subconsciously fear success because it will require more of them. But whether we’re struggling or thriving, life will be testing us either way. I don’t know about you, but I’d rather be tested while I’m succeeding.

Perhaps the only thing holding your business back is the fear of what you’ll do if the best should happen. It sounds rather silly, but many fall into that line of thinking. It’s expected for someone to fear failure. That’s a normal emotion. But the fear of success, while less understood, is also a normal emotion. Success means we’re reaching our dreams, but as Spiderman’s Uncle Ben pointed out, “With great power, comes great responsbility.” The more we succeed, the more will be expected of us. Essentially the pedestal we stand on is now higher from the ground and the consequences of one misstep are far greater.

So while the fear of success is real and a normal emotion, we can’t let it stand in our way. The best way to deal with success is to surround yourself with a support team that can bolster you as the expectations mount. A good staff or team can make success easier to bear.
